To use motorways in Austria and Switzerland, you need a vignette. Rental cars registered there usually already have one, but for a German rental car you have to buy it yourself.
Low-emission zones, parking and fuel
Some German cities have low-emission zones (Umweltzone) that require a green sticker, which rental cars usually have. Where parking requires a parking disc (Parkscheibe), set your arrival time and display the disc clearly behind the windscreen; there's usually one in the car.
