How much does car rental for tourists cost in Stuttgart?
Around Stuttgart, rental cars on Rentlo currently start at €89 a day. The final price depends on the vehicle, duration, mileage and extras such as an additional driver, delivery or a cross-border authorisation. You'll see all costs before you send your request.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
Not with a licence from the EU or EEA. For licences from other countries, an IDP or a translation may be required depending on where it was issued, especially if it isn't in the Latin alphabet. It also matters whether the rental company accepts your licence, so if in doubt, ask beforehand.
Do I need a credit card for the deposit?
Not necessarily. Depending on the vehicle, you can pay the deposit online by credit card, PayPal or bank transfer, or in cash or by card at pick-up. Some rental companies offer vehicles with no deposit.
Is there really no speed limit on German motorways?
Many sections have no general limit, but the recommended speed is 130 km/h. Numerous stretches are restricted by signs, for example at roadworks or around cities. On country roads the limit is usually 100 km/h, in built-up areas 50 km/h.
Do I need a vignette in Austria and Switzerland?
Yes. A vignette is mandatory for motorways and expressways in both countries, available as a sticker or a digital vignette. Rental cars from Austria or Switzerland usually already have one. If you cross the border in a German rental car, buy it yourself beforehand.
What is a low-emission zone?
In some German cities, only vehicles with a green emissions sticker (Umweltplakette) may enter certain areas. Rental cars usually already have the sticker. Look out for the signs at the start of the zone.

Guide
Low-emission zones, parking and fuel
Some German cities have low-emission zones (Umweltzone) that require a green sticker, which rental cars usually have. Where parking requires a parking disc (Parkscheibe), set your arrival time and display the disc clearly behind the windscreen; there's usually one in the car. Check the fuel policy: you often return the car with the same fuel level as at pick-up.
Driving into a neighbouring country
If you're planning a trip from Stuttgart into a neighbouring country, check beforehand whether the rental company allows cross-border trips and whether you need a cross-border authorisation. Some rental companies exclude certain countries entirely. The emergency number in the EU and Switzerland is 112, and a warning triangle and hi-vis vest are mandatory in Germany and Austria.
Driving licence, ID and deposit
Driving licences from the EU and EEA are recognised in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. With a licence from another country, depending on where it was issued, you may also need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official translation, and the rental company must accept it. Bring your passport or national ID card too. Depending on the vehicle, you pay the deposit by credit card, PayPal, bank transfer or at pick-up.
