Each rental company sets its own rules. Often at least one year of holding a licence is required, more for some cars. The “Licence held since” filter shows you which offers suit you.
What is a young driver fee?
It's a surcharge some rental companies charge for drivers under a certain age, usually under 21 or 25. It is charged per day or per rental and is listed in the terms of the offer.
Can I rent a car with accompanied driving at 17?
Usually not. With accompanied driving you may only drive with a registered accompanying person, and rental companies typically set the minimum age for renters at 18 or higher. If in doubt, ask the rental company directly.
Can I rent a van at 18?
Some rental companies release vans up to 3.5 t, which you can drive with a category B licence, from age 18. Because of their size, some driving experience helps. Check the minimum age and licence duration for each vehicle.
What is the alcohol limit during the probationary period?
In Germany, a strict zero-alcohol rule applies to new drivers on probation and to everyone under 21. In Austria and Switzerland, the limit during the probationary period is 0.1 per mille. The safest rule: no alcohol if you're driving.

Tips for your first rental
Choose a car you feel confident in and plan your first journey without time pressure. Take photos of existing damage at handover and ask for a quick explanation of the controls. If you're travelling with friends: only registered drivers may drive, and additional drivers must also meet the age limit.
Which cars can you rent at 18?
For young drivers, rental companies usually release cars with moderate power: small and compact cars, sometimes also vans up to 3.5 t that you can drive with a category B licence. Sports cars and premium models are almost never available at 18. This page only shows cars you are allowed to rent at 18.
Extra costs to expect
Because young drivers statistically have more accidents, many rental companies charge a young driver fee per day or per rental. The excess is also often higher than for older drivers.
