Guide

What you can drive with category B

Category B covers motor vehicles up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver's seat. The same limits apply in Austria and Switzerland, where it is also called category B. What counts is the maximum authorised mass in the vehicle registration document, not the actual weight when loaded.

Trailers and code B96

With category B you can tow a trailer up to 750 kg; heavier trailers are allowed if the whole combination does not exceed 3,500 kg. With code B96, combinations up to 4,250 kg are possible; above that you need category BE. Also check the towing capacity of the rental vehicle and whether it has a tow bar.

Old class 3: more than 3.5 t

Anyone who passed the old German class 3 test before 1999 can usually drive vehicles up to 7.5 t. Which categories apply exactly is shown on your card licence after the exchange. Rental companies check this carefully for vehicles over 3.5 t, so mention your licence categories in your request.
