Support & help›Which van will fit a sofa?
A medium to large van is usually enough for a standard sofa; for a large corner sofa it should be a long high-roof van. Measure the sofa including packaging and compare it with the load space. If in doubt, ask the rental company for the length and door height.
Can I hire a van for just a few hours?
Many rental companies offer an hourly rate covering 8 hours alongside the daily rate. You can see whether it's available in the prices section of the offer. For a furniture store run or a nearby collection, that's often enough.
Do I need a special driving licence?
For small and large vans up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight, a category B licence is enough. Some rental companies require a minimum age and a certain licence-holding period, which you'll find in the offer.
How do I transport a washing machine properly?
Fit the transit bolts before moving it, otherwise the drum can be damaged. Keep the machine upright, secure it with ratchet straps and place it as close to the bulkhead as possible. A sack truck or a tail lift makes loading and unloading easier.
What do I need to secure the load?
Ratchet straps, blankets and possibly anti-slip mats. Some rental companies keep straps in the vehicle, but ask beforehand. Secure every piece of furniture so it can't slide when you brake. This is also required by law.
Can I use the van to collect second-hand furniture bought online?
Yes, a rental van is ideal for that. Agree with the seller beforehand on measurements, floor level and whether someone will help carry. Factor the distance into your rental time and included mileage, especially if the collection is in another town.

Measure instead of guessing
Measure your furniture including packaging before choosing a vehicle and compare it with the load length, the width between the wheel arches and the height of the rear door. A sofa or wardrobe section can often only be transported upright or at an angle. Also check that the furniture will fit through the stairwell and doors, otherwise even the biggest van won't help.
Small van or large van?
For individual pieces, a washing machine or several flat-pack boxes from the furniture store, a small van or high-roof car is often enough. For a sofa, kitchen units or a complete bedroom, a large van makes more sense. The lower the load sill, the easier the loading, and some rental companies offer a tail lift on larger vehicles.
Secure the load and protect your furniture
An unsecured load is dangerous and can result in a fine. Bring ratchet straps, blankets and corner protectors and use the lashing points in the load area. Heavy items go at the bottom and close to the bulkhead. For washing machines, fit the transit bolts before moving so the drum isn't damaged.
