Support & help
Are manual cars cheaper than automatics?

Often, yes, especially small and compact cars. For larger vehicles, automatic is often standard and there's hardly any choice. Compare the total price including kilometres and deposit.

Can I drive a manual car with an automatic-only licence?

Not with code 78. In Germany, it is possible with code 197 after additional training. Check field 12 of your driving licence if you're unsure.

Do electric cars have a manual gearbox?

No, electric cars drive without a manual gearbox. If you're specifically looking for a manual, you'll find it among combustion-engine cars, usually in the smaller classes or among vans.

Are there vans with a manual gearbox?

Yes, manual gearboxes are still widespread in vans. Many rental companies also offer automatic vans, though. Look out for the feature in the offer.

I haven't driven a manual car for a long time. What should I watch out for?

Before your first trip, practise briefly in the car park to see where the clutch bites and how reverse is engaged. Plan your first journey without time pressure and avoid steep car park ramps at first. After a few kilometres, the routine usually comes back quickly.

Guide

Why rent a manual car?

Manual cars are often slightly cheaper in the smaller classes, and anyone who learned to drive with a manual gearbox often feels more confident in one. Some also value the direct control, for example on hills or with lots of luggage. The choice is shrinking, though, as new models increasingly come with automatic transmission.

Which cars still come with a manual gearbox?

You'll most often find manual gearboxes in small and compact cars as well as in vans and panel vans. Electric cars never have one, and premium cars and large SUVs are almost always automatic. If the manual gearbox matters to you, book a car with this feature specifically.

Check your licence

With code 78 on your licence, you may not drive a manual car. In Germany, code 197 allows you to drive cars with a manual gearbox after additional training, despite an automatic test. Without such a restriction on your licence, you may drive both types of transmission.
