Support & help›How old do I have to be to hire a prom car?
Each rental company sets its own rules. Smaller rental cars are sometimes available from 18, while for sports cars and luxury saloons the minimum age for self-drive is usually 21 to 25. On top of that, one to three years of holding a licence are often required. The exact requirements are listed with every offer.
I'm 18. How can I still arrive at my prom in a sports car?
The easiest way is with a chauffeur, which some rental companies offer. Alternatively, an older person who meets the minimum age and licence requirements and is registered as the driver can drive, for example a parent. Being allowed behind the wheel of a sports car yourself at 18 is rare.
Is a stretch limo worth it for a group?
For a larger group, often yes: you arrive together, have a driver and share the cost. Stretch limousines are generally hired out with a chauffeur. Check the number of seats, the rental period and the rules on drinks in the car beforehand.
Can I drive myself home after the prom?
Only if you are completely sober. In Germany, new drivers on probation and everyone under 21 are subject to a zero-alcohol rule at the wheel, and Austria and Switzerland also have very low limits for new drivers. So plan the journey home in advance: a sober driver, a chauffeur or a taxi.
Can I also hire a car for a Maturaball in Austria?
Yes, on Rentlo you'll also find offers in Austria and Switzerland. Maturabälle often take place in autumn or winter, so a saloon is then usually a better choice than a convertible. The same considerations about minimum age and drivers apply as for a prom in Germany.
When should I book my prom car?
As soon as the date is fixed, ideally several weeks ahead. In June and July many schools celebrate on the same weekends, so popular cars are booked early. Also check the cancellation terms in case the date or group changes.

Guide
Three solutions: chauffeur, parents or stretch limo
Some rental companies offer their cars with a chauffeur: you enjoy the evening while someone else drives. Alternatively, parents, older siblings or friends who meet the requirements and are registered as the driver can take the wheel. For the whole group, a stretch limousine with a driver is ideal, and you share the cost.
Alcohol and probationary licences
In Germany, anyone on a probationary licence or under 21 must not drink any alcohol at all before driving, and Austria and Switzerland also have strict limits for new drivers. On the night of the ball, that means either someone stays sober and drives, or you book a driver. Plan the journey home after midnight as well.
Book early: and don't forget the Maturaball
In Germany, proms (Abibälle) usually take place in June and July, often on the same weekends, so suitable cars go quickly. In Austria, the Maturaball is often held in autumn or winter, so think about winter tyres and better skip the convertible. Send your request as soon as the date is set and agree pick-up and return times precisely.
