Support & help
Does the rental car have winter tyres?

During the winter season, rental cars usually run on winter or all-season tyres, but you shouldn't rely on it. Ask the rental company which tyres are fitted and have it confirmed, especially for trips to the Alps.

Are winter tyres compulsory in Austria?

Austria has a situational winter equipment requirement from 1 November to 15 April: in wintry conditions you need winter tyres, or alternatively snow chains on roads fully covered with snow or ice. Check the current rules before you travel, for example with a motoring club.

Do I need snow chains?

Where signs require them, you must fit snow chains. In the Alps this happens more often when it snows. Ask the rental company whether chains are in the car and whether they fit the tyre size. Ideally, practise fitting them beforehand in a car park.

Do I need an all-wheel-drive car for a ski holiday?

Not necessarily. Good winter tyres are enough for most ski resorts. All-wheel drive helps when pulling away on steep, snowy roads, but it replaces neither winter tyres nor careful driving.

Can I take the rental car to Austria, Switzerland or Italy?

That's up to the rental company. Many allow trips to neighbouring countries, often only with a cross-border authorisation and sometimes for a fee. State your destination in your request and have the permission confirmed; you'll also need the vignette for Austria and Switzerland.

Are there rental cars with a roof box or ski rack?

Some rental companies offer roof boxes or ski racks as extras, others have cars with a permanently fitted box. Ask in good time, as they're in demand during the season. With a roof box, watch the height clearance in car parks and garages.

Show all 16 questions
Do I have to pay a deposit?

The rental company decides per vehicle. Many deposits can be paid online; otherwise on site.

How old do I need to be?

Minimum age and licence duration are shown on each vehicle.

How is the vehicle insured?

Vehicles are insured by the rental company, which sets cover and excess.

What is the best price guarantee?

Rental companies offer their vehicles on Rentlo at the same price as directly. Found it cheaper? Let us know.

Can I cancel?

Before confirmation you can withdraw for free. After that the rental company's cancellation terms apply.

Is there a Rentlo app?

Yes, for iPhone and Android, including Rentlo Shorts with real videos and sound.

Guide

Book early and allow extra time

During the Christmas holidays, the winter school holidays and on weekends with fresh snow, winter-ready SUVs and minibuses are booked up quickly. Allow for traffic jams and weather on the way there and agree a return time with some leeway. Snow can't be guaranteed, so read the cancellation terms in case you need to change plans at short notice.

Winter tyres: the rules in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Germany has a situational winter tyre requirement: in snow, ice or slippery conditions you need tyres with the Alpine symbol. In Austria, a situational winter equipment requirement applies from 1 November to 15 April. Switzerland has no general obligation, but if you cause an accident on unsuitable tyres, you can face consequences for liability and insurance. Check the current rules before you set off and ask the rental company which tyres are fitted.

Snow chains, all-wheel drive and equipment

On some Alpine roads, signs make snow chains compulsory in snowy conditions. Ask the rental company whether chains are in the car and ideally practise fitting them once beforehand. All-wheel drive helps when pulling away on slopes, but it doesn't replace good tyres or shorten braking distances. A ski box or roof box is handy for skis and snowboards, offered as an extra by some rental companies.
