Many ski resorts are in Austria, Switzerland or Italy. State your destination in your request, as the rental company has to allow trips abroad, often with a cross-border authorisation, sometimes for a fee. For motorways in Austria and Switzerland you need a vignette if the car doesn't have one; some tunnels and mountain pass roads charge extra tolls.
Book early and allow extra time
During the Christmas holidays, the winter school holidays and on weekends with fresh snow, winter-ready SUVs and minibuses are booked up quickly. Allow for traffic jams and weather on the way there and agree a return time with some leeway. Snow can't be guaranteed, so read the cancellation terms in case you need to change plans at short notice.
