Support & help›Can I hire a car for my 18th birthday?
Yes, but not every car. Some rental companies rent certain cars from 18, while for sports cars and luxury cars the minimum age is usually 21 to 25. The exact conditions are listed with every offer.
Can I book the rental as a surprise for someone else?
Yes, you can send a request on behalf of another person. Important: whoever drives must meet the minimum age, licence and other requirements and be registered as the driver. Check this beforehand so the surprise doesn't fall flat at pick-up.
Is there a voucher instead of a fixed booking?
Yes, with a Rentlo voucher the birthday person can choose the car and date themselves. That's handy if you don't know their dream model or their schedule. The conditions of the chosen car still apply.
How long should I hire the car for?
A few hours or a day are often enough for a drive. If you want to go away for the weekend, the weekend rate is often worthwhile. Many rental companies lower the daily rate for longer rentals.
What is Rentlo?
Rentlo is a marketplace for all kinds of rental vehicles in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. You rent directly from verified local rental companies.
How does renting in Bavaria work?
Choose a vehicle, pick your dates and send a request. Once the rental company confirms, you pay securely online and collect the car or have it delivered.
When do I pay?
Only once the rental company has confirmed your request. Payment runs via Stripe.
Which payment methods are available?
Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut Pay, iDEAL and Klarna. For some vehicles you can pay 10 % online and the rest in cash at pick-up.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
The rental company decides per vehicle. Many deposits can be paid online; otherwise on site.
How old do I need to be?
Minimum age and licence duration are shown on each vehicle.
Show all 14 questions
How is the vehicle insured?
Vehicles are insured by the rental company, which sets cover and excess.
What is the best price guarantee?
Rental companies offer their vehicles on Rentlo at the same price as directly. Found it cheaper? Let us know.
Can I cancel?
Before confirmation you can withdraw for free. After that the rental company's cancellation terms apply.
Is there a Rentlo app?
Yes, for iPhone and Android, including Rentlo Shorts with real videos and sound.
Guide
Keep the date flexible
Birthdays often fall on a weekend, when special cars are in high demand. If you celebrate a day earlier or later, you'll often have more choice and sometimes better prices. With a convertible, it's worth keeping an eye on the weather forecast and the rental company's cancellation terms.
The perfect birthday drive
Plan a route with scenic roads, a stop for photos and a destination such as a restaurant. Roughly work out the distance so the included kilometres are enough, or choose a mileage package. Some rental companies will also bring the car right to your front door, which makes for a real surprise.
Plan the surprise: but check the requirements
If the car is meant to be a surprise, discreetly check the person's age, how long they've held their licence and whether they can pay a deposit. Whoever drives must meet the rental company's requirements and be registered as the driver. If something doesn't fit, a Rentlo voucher is the more flexible solution.
