Support & help
Can I get a child seat from the rental company?

That depends on the rental company. Some offer baby seats, child seats or booster seats for a fee, others don't. Mention your child's age, height and weight in your request, or bring your own approved seat.

Which car is best for a family with three children?

If three child seats need to fit, MPVs and 7-seaters are usually a better choice than a regular estate car. The children sit in separate seats and there's room to buckle up. Check the number of seats in the offer and ask the rental company which seats have Isofix.

How much luggage fits in a 7-seater?

With all seven seats in use, the boot is fairly small in many models. Fold down the third row and you get much more space. For holiday luggage with a full car, a roof box can help, and some rental companies offer cars with one.

Can both parents drive the rental car?

Yes, as long as both are registered as drivers and meet the rental company's requirements, such as minimum age and years of holding a licence. The second person is usually charged as an additional driver per day. If someone who isn't registered drives, insurance cover may not apply.

Can I take the rental car abroad on a family holiday?

Many rental companies allow trips to certain countries, often if agreed in advance and sometimes for a fee. Clarify this before booking and have it confirmed. Also remember vignettes, for example for Austria or Switzerland, and the child seat rules in your destination country.

When should I send a request for the school holidays?

Large family cars are in high demand during school holidays and around public holidays. Send your request as early as possible once your dates are fixed. You can see the rental company's cancellation terms in the offer beforehand, so you know what applies if plans change.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

The rental company decides per vehicle. Many deposits can be paid online; otherwise on site.

Minimum age and licence duration are shown on each vehicle.

How is the vehicle insured?

Vehicles are insured by the rental company, which sets cover and excess.

Guide

Child seats: rules and the right size

In Germany, children under 12 who are shorter than 150 cm generally need a suitable child seat; Austria and Switzerland have similar but separate rules. Some rental companies provide child seats for a fee, others don't. Ask in advance about size and standard, such as i-Size, or bring your own seat. Check whether the car has Isofix, and switch off the passenger airbag if you fit a rear-facing baby seat in the front.

Which car suits your family?

For two children and holiday luggage, an estate car with a large boot is often enough. Three child seats side by side are a tight fit in many cars: an MPV or 7-seater is then the better choice. Sliding doors make getting in and out easier in tight parking spaces. Note: with all seven seats in use, there is usually little boot space left.

Planning long journeys

On longer trips, plan a break roughly every two hours: children need to move, and whoever is driving stays more alert. If both parents drive, registering an additional driver is worthwhile. Keep snacks, drinks and entertainment within reach, and check before you set off whether there are USB ports or tablet holders. For holiday trips abroad, ask the rental company in advance whether the journey is allowed.
