Support & help›Which estate cars can I rent?
Typical estates include the Skoda Octavia and Superb Estate, VW Passat Estate, Audi A4 and A6 Avant, BMW 3 Series and 5 Series Touring or the Mercedes E-Class Estate. Some rental companies also have sporty estates such as the Audi RS 6. The list shows what's currently available.
How big is an estate car's boot?
Usually around 500 to 650 litres, and up to roughly 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded. It depends a lot on the model. Large mid-size estates such as the Superb or Passat are among the most spacious.
Can my dog travel in the rental car?
That's up to the rental company. Some allow pets, often with a crate or protective blanket, others don't. Clarify this before booking and expect cleaning fees if the car gets very dirty.
Are there estate cars with a tow bar?
Yes, many estates have a tow bar, but not all. The listing shows whether the car has one. Also check the permitted towing capacity: with a category B licence, the combination may generally weigh up to 3.5 tonnes gross; above that you usually need B96 or BE.
Is an estate better than an SUV for a holiday?
For lots of luggage and long motorway drives, often yes: estates offer as much load space or more and usually use less fuel. An SUV, on the other hand, has a higher seating position and more often comes with all-wheel drive. In the end, it depends on what matters more to you.
Can I use an estate for a small move?
For boxes, bags and smaller furniture, an estate is often enough, especially with the rear seats folded. Protect the interior and upholstery with blankets and secure the load. For a wardrobe, washing machine or sofa, you'll need a van.

Guide
Estate or SUV?
An estate often offers as much load space as an SUV or more, sits lower on the road and frequently uses less fuel. An SUV scores with a higher seating position and easier access. If luggage and long distances are your priority, the estate is usually the more sensible choice.
How much fits in an estate?
Depending on the model, an estate's boot holds around 500 to 650 litres, and up to roughly 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded. That easily takes a family's holiday luggage, a pushchair or a flat-packed shelf. For large furniture, a van is still the better choice.
Travelling with a dog
The estate is the classic dog car, but not every rental company allows animals in the vehicle. Clarify this before booking and use a crate or protective blanket so no hair or scratches are left behind. Cleaning fees may apply if the car is very dirty.
