Child seats: rules and the right size
In Germany, children under 12 who are shorter than 150 cm generally need a suitable child seat; Austria and Switzerland have similar but separate rules. Some rental companies provide child seats for a fee, others don't. Ask in advance about size and standard, such as i-Size, or bring your own seat. Check whether the car has Isofix, and switch off the passenger airbag if you fit a rear-facing baby seat in the front.

For two children and holiday luggage, an estate car with a large boot is often enough. Three child seats side by side are a tight fit in many cars: an MPV or 7-seater is then the better choice.
