Support & help›Can I rent a car during my probationary period?
In principle, yes: the probationary period itself doesn't prevent you from renting. What matters is the minimum age and licence duration set by the rental company. Keep in mind the stricter probation rules, for example on alcohol.
What is the minimum time I need to have held my licence?
That varies by rental company and car. Often it's one to three years, less for some small cars, more for powerful ones. You'll find the exact requirement in the offer.
What does code 78 on my driving licence mean?
Code 78 means you may only drive cars with automatic transmission because you took your test in an automatic. In that case, make sure you rent an automatic. In Germany, code 197 lets you drive manual cars too after additional training, despite an automatic test.
Do I need a protection package as a new driver?
It's only mandatory if the rental company requires it. It often makes sense anyway, because the excess for young drivers is frequently higher. Smart or Sorglos lowers it.
Can I drive abroad as a new driver?
That depends on the rental company, not on your probationary period. Many only allow trips abroad if agreed in advance. Find out about the rules in your destination country beforehand, such as alcohol limits and speed limits.
What is Rentlo?

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut Pay, iDEAL and Klarna. For some vehicles you can pay 10 % online and the rest in cash at pick-up.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
The rental company decides per vehicle. Many deposits can be paid online; otherwise on site.

Guide
The right car to start with
A small or compact car is easy to oversee, easy to park and usually cheaper in rent and excess. If you learned to drive in an automatic, make sure you choose an automatic: with code 78 on your licence you may only drive automatics. It's better to save large vans or powerful cars for later.
Rules during the probationary period
In Germany the probationary period lasts two years, in Switzerland three, and Austria also has a probationary licence. New drivers in Germany are subject to a strict zero-alcohol rule; in Austria and Switzerland the limit during probation is 0.1 per mille. Offences can lead to mandatory courses and an extended probationary period.
Protection package and handover
A protection package such as Smart or Sorglos lowers the excess and therefore your risk with minor damage. Photograph the car all round at handover and have existing damage noted in the report. Ask how the lights, driver assistance systems and fuel flap work. It saves stress on the road.
