Support & help
Why do rental companies ask for a deposit at all?

The deposit protects the rental company against damage, missing fuel, extra kilometres or fines that only come to light after the return. If everything is in order, it is released. If a rental company waives it, it usually covers itself through the excess, a protection package or the price.

Is there a credit check if I pay no deposit?

That's up to the rental company. Your identity and driving licence are always checked, and some rental companies also obtain a credit report. If you're unsure, send the rental company a quick question before booking.

Which cars are available without a deposit?

Most often these are small and compact cars, estates or vans with a moderate vehicle value. For sports cars and luxury cars, waiving the deposit is rare. This page shows you which cars near you are an option.

What happens if there's damage and I paid no deposit?

You are liable as with any rental, up to the agreed excess. The rental company invoices you for the damage afterwards instead of keeping it from a deposit. A higher protection package reduces the amount you pay yourself.

What are the alternatives if no deposit-free offer suits me?

Many rental companies accept the deposit in cash at pick-up, via PayPal or by bank transfer, and some even take your own car as collateral. That way you don't need a credit card, even if a deposit is due. The possible deposit types are listed with every car.

Guide

You'll still be checked

Even without a deposit, the rental company wants to know who it is handing its car to. Have your ID card or passport and your driving licence ready; some rental companies also run a credit check. Minimum age and years of driving experience still apply. If your details are complete, confirmation is usually quicker.

Damage and costs after the rental

Without a deposit you are still liable for damage, missing fuel, extra kilometres or fines: the rental company will invoice you afterwards. Take photos at pick-up and return and have existing damage noted in the handover report. A protection package with a low excess limits your risk further.

How does renting without a deposit work?

Normally you pay a deposit before pick-up, which is released after you return the car. For cars with the deposit type “No deposit”, this step is skipped. The rental company takes on more risk and often balances this out elsewhere. The exact terms are listed with every offer.
