Support & help
How long can I drive in Germany with a non-EU licence?

Generally for up to six months after taking up residence in Germany; after that you need to exchange it. If you're only visiting, this time limit is usually not the issue. This is not legal advice. The driving licence authority can give you a binding answer.

Do I need an international driving permit?

If your licence is not issued in Latin script, usually yes. Some rental companies also generally require it for licences from outside the EU. You have to apply for it before travelling, in the country that issued your licence.

What about Austria and Switzerland?

As a visitor, you can usually drive in both countries with a valid foreign licence. If you move to Austria with a licence from outside the EU, similar time limits apply as in Germany; in Switzerland you usually have to exchange it within twelve months. The responsible authority knows the exact rules.

Which documents do I need to bring to pick-up?

Usually your original driving licence, a passport or ID card and, if needed, your international driving permit. For the deposit you'll need a card, PayPal or cash depending on the offer. The exact requirements are in the rental terms.

Can I drive the rental car to my home country?

That's up to the rental company. Trips abroad are often only allowed to certain countries and by prior agreement, sometimes for a fee or with a cross-border authorisation. Clarify this before booking and have it confirmed.

Guide

Practical tip for pick-up

Bring your original driving licence, ID card or passport and, if needed, your international driving permit. Photos or copies are usually not accepted. If you're unsure whether your licence will be accepted, mention the issuing country in your request. That way you won't be left without a car on the day of handover.

EU, EEA or non-EU: what applies?

Licences from EU and EEA countries are generally valid in Germany and Austria without being exchanged. For licences from other countries, the basic rule in Germany is: once you take up residence here, you can usually drive with it for another six months, after which you need a German licence. Austria has similar time limits, while in Switzerland it is generally twelve months. Only the responsible authority can give you a binding answer.

International driving permit

If your licence is not issued in Latin script, you will usually also need an international driving permit. It is only valid together with the original and is issued in the country that issued your licence, so apply before you travel. Some rental companies require it even for licences in Latin script, so check the terms in the offer.
