Support & help›Can I rent a car with my foreign driving licence?
Often yes, as long as your licence is valid in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and the rental company accepts it. For licences from outside the EU, many rental companies also require an International Driving Permit or a translation, plus a minimum number of years of driving experience. It's best to ask the rental company before booking.
How long can I drive with a non-EU licence?
Deadlines apply once you take up residence: usually six months in Germany and Austria and generally twelve months in Switzerland. After that, you often need to exchange your licence, with or without a test depending on the issuing country. Only the responsible driving licence authority can give you a binding answer.
Do I need a registration certificate to rent a car?
Not every rental company requires one, but some ask for a local address or proof of it. If you haven't registered yet, your passport and driving licence are often enough, but it's up to the rental company. Check briefly in advance, especially for longer rentals.
Can I pay the deposit without a credit card?
With some rental companies, yes. Depending on the car, the deposit can be paid online via PayPal or bank transfer, or in cash at pick-up, and some offers come with no deposit at all. The accepted options are shown in every offer, and you can filter by them in the app.
Is a monthly rental worth it instead of buying a car?
For your first months it can make sense: you skip buying, registering, insuring and later selling a car, and you stay flexible. If you're staying longer, compare the total costs. A monthly rental over 28 days or a car subscription gives you time to decide without pressure.
Which traffic rules should newcomers know?
At junctions without signs, priority to the right applies, and some German cities have low-emission zones that require a sticker. In Germany and Austria, suitable winter tyres are mandatory in wintry conditions, and motorways in Austria and Switzerland require a vignette. Rental cars usually already have the required sticker. If in doubt, ask the rental company.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

Guide
Documents the rental company may ask for
You'll usually need a valid driving licence, an ID card or passport and a means of payment for the rental and the deposit. If your licence isn't in the Latin alphabet or not in EU format, many rental companies also require an International Driving Permit or an official translation. Some may ask for a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) or a local address. Clarify this before pick-up to avoid surprises at handover.
Deposit without a credit card
Not everyone has a credit card the rental company accepts when they first arrive. Some rental companies take the deposit via PayPal, bank transfer or in cash at pick-up, and some offer cars with no deposit at all. You can filter by deposit type in the app. You can pay the rental itself with Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Klarna or card, for example.
Monthly rental or subscription instead of buying
As long as you don't know how long you'll stay or where you'll live, owning a car can be an unnecessary commitment. A monthly rental over 28 days keeps you flexible; with a car subscription, insurance and maintenance are often included, depending on the provider. Also get to know the local rules, such as low-emission zones, winter tyres in wintry conditions and the motorway vignette in Austria and Switzerland.
