Weather and the roof
Check the weather forecast before you set off and ask to be shown how the roof works at handover. Many roofs can only be opened and closed when stationary or at low speed. Never leave the car unattended with the roof open, as rain damage or theft can get expensive.
Little room for luggage
Convertibles usually have a small boot that often shrinks even further with the roof down. Pack soft bags rather than hard-shell suitcases. In two-seaters like the MX-5, there's often only room for light luggage for a weekend.
Sun protection and comfort
Driving top down is fun but can be tiring. Remember sun cream, sunglasses and a hat, and take breaks on long journeys. A wind deflector noticeably reduces turbulence in the cabin. Ask the rental company whether one is included.
