When is the best time to rent a convertible?
The classic convertible season usually runs from April to September. For summer weekends, you should send your request early. In spring and autumn, the choice is often bigger, and on sunny days it's still lovely to drive with the top down.
What happens if it rains?
Then you simply close the roof. Modern convertibles are watertight and suitable for everyday use when closed. Close the roof in good time and never leave the car open. Otherwise, water damage to the interior may be charged to you.
How much luggage fits in a convertible?
Usually not much: the boot is small and often gets smaller with the roof down. Soft holdalls are enough for a weekend for two. If you need more space, choose a four-seat convertible, where the rear seats can help out if needed.
How old do I have to be to rent a convertible?
Each rental company sets its own rules. For small convertibles the minimum age is often lower, while for powerful models such as the Porsche 911 or Mustang it's usually higher. The exact requirements are listed with every offer.

Weather and the roof
Check the weather forecast before you set off and ask to be shown how the roof works at handover. Many roofs can only be opened and closed when stationary or at low speed. Never leave the car unattended with the roof open, as rain damage or theft can get expensive.
Little room for luggage
Convertibles usually have a small boot that often shrinks even further with the roof down. Pack soft bags rather than hard-shell suitcases. In two-seaters like the MX-5, there's often only room for light luggage for a weekend.
Sun protection and comfort
Driving top down is fun but can be tiring. Remember sun cream, sunglasses and a hat, and take breaks on long journeys. A wind deflector noticeably reduces turbulence in the cabin. Ask the rental company whether one is included.
