Support & help
Can I drive any rental car abroad?

No. Trips abroad are only allowed with the rental company's consent. This page shows cars for which cross-border travel is generally possible. In the app you book cross-border authorisation as an extra for this.

What is a cross-border authorisation?

With the cross-border authorisation, the rental company confirms that you may use its car abroad. As you're not the registered keeper of the car, it lets you prove your permission at roadside or border checks. In the app you book it as an extra for each booking.

Which countries can I drive to?

Every rental company sets this in its own list of countries. Trips to neighbouring countries are often possible, while restrictions frequently apply to some countries in Eastern Europe. Name your destination and all transit countries in your request.

Do I need a vignette?

For motorways in Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and Czechia, yes. Rental cars registered in Austria or Switzerland usually already have the national vignette; German cars don't automatically. Ask the rental company and buy any missing vignettes before the border.

What happens if I drive abroad without permission?

Then you're in breach of the rental agreement. If there's damage, your insurance cover may not apply, and the rental company can charge you for any costs incurred. So always clarify the trip in advance.

Does my protection package also apply abroad?

That depends on the rental company and the package. Check the terms or ask whether the excess and cover are the same abroad. Also note down whom to contact in the event of a breakdown or accident abroad.

What is Rentlo?

Rentlo is a marketplace for all kinds of rental vehicles in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. You rent directly from verified local rental companies.

How does renting in Hesse work?

Choose a vehicle, pick your dates and send a request. Once the rental company confirms, you pay securely online and collect the car or have it delivered.

When do I pay?

Only once the rental company has confirmed your request. Payment runs via Stripe.

Which payment methods are available?

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut Pay, iDEAL and Klarna. For some vehicles you can pay 10 % online and the rest in cash at pick-up.

Show all 16 questions
Do I have to pay a deposit?

The rental company decides per vehicle. Many deposits can be paid online; otherwise on site.

How old do I need to be?

Minimum age and licence duration are shown on each vehicle.

How is the vehicle insured?

Vehicles are insured by the rental company, which sets cover and excess.

What is the best price guarantee?

Rental companies offer their vehicles on Rentlo at the same price as directly. Found it cheaper? Let us know.

Can I cancel?

Before confirmation you can withdraw for free. After that the rental company's cancellation terms apply.

Is there a Rentlo app?

Yes, for iPhone and Android, including Rentlo Shorts with real videos and sound.

Guide

Low-emission zones and traffic rules abroad

Many cities abroad have their own low-emission zones, for example France with the Crit'Air sticker, which you have to order in advance. Rules on hi-vis vests, daytime lights or speed limits also differ from country to country. Check before your trip with a motoring club or on the official websites of your destination country.

Documents and help on the road

Take your driving licence, ID, vehicle registration document, rental agreement and cross-border authorisation with you. Clarify in advance what to do in the event of a breakdown or accident abroad and which number to call. Also ask whether your protection package applies abroad in the same way as at home.

Cross-border authorisation and permitted countries

Trips abroad are only allowed if the rental company agrees. In the app you book cross-border authorisation as an extra for each booking. Every rental company has its own list of countries: neighbouring countries are often possible, while trips to Eastern Europe are frequently restricted. So name your destination in your request, including all transit countries.
