Support & help›Can I rent a motorbike with an A2 licence?
Yes, if the bike has a maximum of 35 kW or is restricted accordingly. Some rental companies label A2-compatible models or offer restricted versions. If in doubt, ask before booking.
Can I ride a motorbike on a car licence?
Not a full-size motorbike. In Germany, however, a category B licence with the B196 code lets you ride light motorcycles up to 125 cc, but only within Germany. Different rules apply in Austria and Switzerland.
How old do I have to be to rent a motorbike?
Each rental company sets its own rules. For powerful bikes the minimum age is often higher, and several years of holding a category A licence are frequently required. You'll find the conditions with every offer.
Can I rent a helmet and protective gear?
With some rental companies, yes, usually for an extra charge. Many riders bring their own helmet. Clarify with your request which gear is available and in which sizes.
How high is the deposit for a motorbike?
The deposit depends on the value of the bike and is stated in every listing. Depending on the rental company, you pay it online by card, PayPal or bank transfer, or at pick-up. It is released after the return if everything is in order.
Can I take the rental motorbike abroad?
That depends on the rental company. Tours to the Alpine countries are often possible by arrangement. Remember vignettes or tolls, for example in Austria and Switzerland, and have the permission confirmed in your contract.

Guide
The first kilometres on an unfamiliar bike
Every motorbike feels different: riding position, weight, brakes and throttle response. Take your time during the first few kilometres and get used to the power gradually. For tours in the Alps, the Black Forest or the Eifel: check the weather, plan breaks and watch out for pass closures in spring and autumn.
Which licence class do you need?
With category A you can ride any motorbike. A2 allows bikes up to 35 kW, and some rental companies offer restricted models for this. A1 covers light motorcycles up to 125 cc; in Germany, car drivers can also ride these with the B196 code. Many rental companies also require a minimum age and several years of riding experience.
Helmet and protective gear
A helmet is compulsory, and good protective gear with jacket, trousers, gloves and boots is strongly recommended. Some rental companies rent out helmets and clothing for an extra charge, though for hygiene reasons many riders bring their own helmet. Also ask about panniers, a top box or a sat-nav mount.
