Support & help
Which car is best for a road trip?

That depends on your route and group. For mountain passes and summer trips for two, a convertible is ideal; for families or lots of luggage, an SUV or estate; and if you want to be flexible about where you sleep, a campervan. Included mileage and comfort often matter more than the model.

Are there rental cars with unlimited mileage?

Yes, some rental companies offer unlimited kilometres, others a daily allowance or mileage packages. You'll see what applies directly in the offer. For long road trips, comparing is especially worthwhile.

Can I return the car somewhere else?

Only if the rental company offers one-way rentals, which isn't possible everywhere and often costs a fee. It's best to ask in your request. Otherwise, plan your road trip as a round trip.

Can I drive the rental car abroad?

Many rental companies allow trips to neighbouring countries, often only by arrangement or with a cross-border authorisation. For motorways in Austria and Switzerland you need a vignette, and other countries partly have their own toll systems. Have the permission confirmed in your contract.

When are mountain pass roads open?

Many high Alpine roads, such as the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, are only open from spring to autumn. The exact opening times depend on the weather and change every year. Check them on the official websites before you set off.

Can we take turns driving?

Yes, as long as all drivers are registered in the contract. Many rental companies let you add additional drivers per day. Every driver must meet the requirements, such as minimum age and licence history.

What is Rentlo?

Rentlo is a marketplace for all kinds of rental vehicles in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. You rent directly from verified local rental companies.

How does renting in Germany work?

Choose a vehicle, pick your dates and send a request. Once the rental company confirms, you pay securely online and collect the car or have it delivered.

When do I pay?

Only once the rental company has confirmed your request. Payment runs via Stripe.

Which payment methods are available?

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut Pay, iDEAL and Klarna. For some vehicles you can pay 10 % online and the rest in cash at pick-up.

Show all 16 questions
Do I have to pay a deposit?

The rental company decides per vehicle. Many deposits can be paid online; otherwise on site.

How old do I need to be?

Minimum age and licence duration are shown on each vehicle.

How is the vehicle insured?

Vehicles are insured by the rental company, which sets cover and excess.

What is the best price guarantee?

Rental companies offer their vehicles on Rentlo at the same price as directly. Found it cheaper? Let us know.

Can I cancel?

Before confirmation you can withdraw for free. After that the rental company's cancellation terms apply.

Is there a Rentlo app?

Yes, for iPhone and Android, including Rentlo Shorts with real videos and sound.

Guide

Plan your included mileage

A road trip quickly adds up to many hundreds of kilometres. Check how many kilometres per day are included and what each extra one costs. Many rental companies offer mileage packages or unlimited kilometres, so work out your route roughly beforehand and compare.

One-way rental and going abroad

If you want to return the car somewhere else, you need a one-way rental. Only some rental companies offer this, often for a fee. Trips abroad usually need approval in advance too; with many offers you can book a cross-border authorisation as an extra. Clarify both before booking.

Route ideas in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Popular routes include the Romantic Road, the German Alpine Road and the Black Forest High Road. In Austria, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road beckons. It's a toll road and only open seasonally. The Grand Tour of Switzerland links many of the country's highlights. Check the opening times of mountain passes beforehand.
