Support & help
Will I get an invoice in my company's name?

Yes, you sign the rental contract directly with the rental company, which issues the invoice. Add your full company name and billing address to your request. That way you have a proper receipt for your accounts.

Which driving licence do I need for a van?

For vans up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, a category B licence is generally enough. Heavier vehicles usually require category C1, and with a trailer, B96, BE or higher categories may apply depending on the total weight. The rental company sets the minimum age and years of driving experience.

Do I have to pay tolls as a tradesperson?

In Germany, vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight are generally subject to tolls. Craft businesses can be exempt under certain conditions for vehicles up to 7.5 t. Check the current rules before you travel, as the conditions are precisely defined.

Are there vans with a tow bar or roof rack?

With some rental companies, yes. Check the equipment in the offer or ask specifically about a tow bar, roof rack or ladder rack in your request. Take the permitted towing capacity and roof load into account.

Can several employees drive the van?

Yes, as long as they're all registered as drivers and meet the rental company's requirements. Additional drivers are usually charged per day. If someone who isn't registered drives, cover may not apply in the event of damage.

Guide

The right vehicle for the job

A closed panel van is ideal for tools, materials and machinery because the load stays dry and lockable. Long or bulky items such as pipes, ladders or timber are easier to carry on a dropside, and with a crew cab the team can ride along. For loose materials and rubble, a tipper is the best choice. If you need a trailer, check for a tow bar and the permitted towing capacity.

3.5 tonnes, licence and tolls

With a category B licence you can drive vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. Above that you usually need category C1. In Germany, vehicles over 3.5 t are generally subject to tolls, but there is an exemption for craft businesses under certain conditions. Check the current rules before you set off, for example with Toll Collect. Austria and Switzerland have their own toll systems for heavy vehicles.

Invoices and costs

Add your company name and billing address to your request so the rental company issues the invoice to your business. Make sure VAT is shown separately if you can reclaim input tax. Also check the included mileage and whether cleaning fees apply if the vehicle comes back dirty from the site. Many rental companies lower the daily rate for longer hires.
