Per day, often yes, because demand is higher at weekends. A weekend package can still be worthwhile if it bundles two or three days at a fixed price. Compare the package price with the total of individual days.

The earlier, the bigger the choice. For normal weekends, a few days' notice is often enough; for public holidays, school holidays or summer weekends with good weather, you should send your request several weeks ahead. Last-minute sometimes works, but you can't count on it.

Yes, you can also simply rent individual days. In that case, the weekend rate usually doesn't apply and daily rates are charged instead. Work out both options: sometimes the package from Friday is barely more expensive.

That depends on the offer. Some rental companies state an allowance for the whole weekend, others included kilometres per day. For a longer trip, a vehicle with a mileage package or unlimited kilometres is worthwhile.

Not every rental company allows it. Before booking, clarify which countries are permitted and whether you need a cross-border authorisation. For motorways in Austria and Switzerland, you'll also need a vignette if the car doesn't already have one.
