Each rental company sets this itself; Friday to Sunday or Friday to Monday is common. The exact pick-up and return times are shown in the offer or agreed with the confirmation.
Is the included mileage enough for a weekend trip?
That depends on your destination. Check the included kilometres in the offer and add up the journey there and back plus any outings. If it's not enough, a mileage package is usually cheaper than individual extra kilometres.
When should I book for a long weekend?
As early as possible, especially for bank holidays and bridge days. You'll have more choice then, particularly for convertibles, people carriers and popular models. Check the cancellation terms in case your plans change.
Can I return the car on Sunday evening?
Some rental companies allow returns on Sunday, for example via a key box, others only on Monday morning. The return time is part of the agreement, so clarify it beforehand so you aren't charged an extra day.
Can someone else drive on the weekend trip?
Yes, if that person is registered as an additional driver. Many rental companies charge a fee per day for this, and the additional driver must also meet the minimum age and licence-holding period.
Can I drive abroad on my weekend trip?
If the rental company allows it. State your destination in your request, as you often need a cross-border authorisation, which sometimes costs extra. For trips to Austria or Switzerland, remember the vignette.

For a city break for two, a compact car that fits into any parking space is enough. For hiking gear or a small group's luggage, an estate or people carrier is more comfortable. And if the journey is the point, a convertible or sports car turns the trip into an experience, though a higher minimum age and a higher deposit usually apply.
How weekend rates work
Many rental companies have their own weekend price, which is often cheaper than two or three individual days. What counts as a weekend is up to each rental company, for example Friday to Sunday or Friday to Monday morning. Check pick-up and return times carefully, as a late return can cost an extra day.
Check the included mileage for your route
Work out how far away your destination is, and don't forget trips once you're there. Weekend rates often include a fixed number of kilometres. If that's not enough, a mileage package is better value than expensive individual kilometres. If your trip goes abroad, have it approved by the rental company in advance.
