Support & help
When is a rental considered long-term?

There's no fixed threshold. It usually means rentals from around one month up to several months. On Rentlo, you book a monthly rental for this and extend it by arrangement with the rental company.

Is long-term rental better than leasing?

That depends on the duration. If you only need the car for a few months or don't know exactly how long, renting is more flexible. For several years, leasing is often cheaper per month but ties you to a fixed term.

Can I rent a car for three or six months?

Yes, by booking several monthly rentals in a row or agreeing a longer rental with the rental company. It's best to ask in your first request whether the vehicle is available for the whole period.

Who pays for servicing, tyres and insurance?

With rental cars, servicing and tyres are usually covered by the rental company, and third-party liability insurance is mandatory for every registered vehicle anyway. You can reduce your excess in the event of damage with a protection package. You pay for fuel or electricity yourself.

Can I end a long-term rental early?

Each rental company decides this itself. With monthly rates, there's often no partial refund for an early return. It's best to clarify this before booking and have it confirmed in writing.

Is long-term rental suitable for businesses?

Yes, many companies use long-term rentals for project teams, new employees or as a replacement for a pool car. Enter your company name and billing address in your request so the invoice is correct. Each additional driver must be registered.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

The rental company decides per vehicle. Many deposits can be paid online; otherwise on site.

How old do I need to be?

Minimum age and licence duration are shown on each vehicle.

How is the vehicle insured?

Vehicles are insured by the rental company, which sets cover and excess.

Rental companies offer their vehicles on Rentlo at the same price as directly. Found it cheaper? Let us know.

Before confirmation you can withdraw for free. After that the rental company's cancellation terms apply.

Guide

Tip for expats and new arrivals

If you move to Germany or Austria with a licence from an EU or EEA country, you can simply keep driving. Licences from other countries generally have to be exchanged within six months of registering your residence, in Switzerland within twelve months. Check with the local licensing authority. Whether a rental company accepts your licence is stated in its terms, or you can ask it directly.

Long-term rental, leasing or car subscription?

Leasing is often cheaper per month, but usually ties you in for several years and sometimes requires a down payment. A car subscription bundles many costs into one rate but has fixed minimum terms depending on the provider. Long-term rental is the most flexible: you rent month by month and decide for yourself how long.

Mileage and insurance over several months

Over several months, the kilometres soon add up. Project your monthly needs and compare them with the allowance in the offer. Also check the excess: a protection package can be worthwhile for a long rental, as the risk of minor damage grows with every month.
