Support & help
How far can I get with a rented electric car?

That depends on the model, the season and your driving style. The WLTP figure is a guide; in winter and at high speeds, the real range is usually noticeably lower. So plan longer journeys with charging breaks.

Who pays for charging a rental car?

Each rental company sets its own rules. Some provide a charging card and bill the costs afterwards, while with others you charge at your own expense via an app. Clarify this when booking so there are no surprises.

Do I have to return the electric car fully charged?

Not necessarily full, but usually with an agreed minimum charge level. If the battery is lower, the rental company may charge for recharging. You'll find the level in the offer or at handover.

Which electric cars can I rent?

Popular examples include the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, VW ID.3 and ID.4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, BMW i4 or Porsche Taycan. Which models are available near you depends on local rental companies. The results show you the current selection.

Do I need a special licence for an electric car?

No, a standard category B licence is enough for electric cars. As EVs have no gears to change, they're also suitable for drivers with an automatic-only licence. The rental company sets the minimum age and required years of holding a licence.

Can I take a rented EV on holiday?

Yes, if the rental company allows the journey and, where relevant, trips abroad. Check the included mileage, plan charging stops along the route and find out which charging card works in your destination country. There are now plenty of rapid chargers along the motorways in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut Pay, iDEAL and Klarna. For some vehicles you can pay 10 % online and the rest in cash at pick-up.

Show all 16 questions
Do I have to pay a deposit?

The rental company decides per vehicle. Many deposits can be paid online; otherwise on site.

How old do I need to be?

Minimum age and licence duration are shown on each vehicle.

How is the vehicle insured?

Vehicles are insured by the rental company, which sets cover and excess.

What is the best price guarantee?

Rental companies offer their vehicles on Rentlo at the same price as directly. Found it cheaper? Let us know.

Can I cancel?

Before confirmation you can withdraw for free. After that the rental company's cancellation terms apply.

Is there a Rentlo app?

Yes, for iPhone and Android, including Rentlo Shorts with real videos and sound.

Guide

Charging on the go

At handover, check whether a charging card or app is included and how charging costs are billed. At rapid chargers you can, depending on the model, add a large share of the battery in around half an hour, while standard AC charging points take much longer. Also check whether a Type 2 charging cable is in the car.

Charge level at return

Many rental companies expect the car back with a certain charge level, similar to refuelling. Ask beforehand which level applies and what recharging costs if the battery is lower. Plan your last charge so you're not pressed for time just before the return.

Ideal for testing before you buy

A test drive at a dealership is usually short. Renting for several days shows you how an EV fits into your everyday life: commuting, shopping, charging at home or on the road. Pay attention to regenerative braking and one-pedal driving too; you get used to it quickly.
