Frequently asked questions

Support & help›Is this an official dealer test drive?
No. On Rentlo you rent from independent rental companies on normal rental terms. In return, you can drive the car in everyday life for several days instead of just a quick lap around the dealership.
Can I test a specific model?
Yes, if a rental company near you offers it. There's no guarantee of a specific model or specification. Use the filters for brand, category and year to find the most similar vehicle.
What's the best way to test an electric car?
Drive your usual routes, charge at home and on the go, and watch how much range you get in everyday driving. Test in cold weather and on the motorway too, as range usually drops then. Ask beforehand which charging cable is included and how charging is billed.
What charge level should I return an EV with?
The rental company decides; some require a minimum charge level. If the offer doesn't say, ask before booking. That way you avoid fees for recharging.
How long should I test a car before buying?
A weekend gives a good first impression; a week shows real everyday life with your commute and shopping. With an EV, a longer test period is worthwhile so you experience different weather and charging situations.
Can I go on holiday with the test car?
In principle yes, if the included mileage and rental terms fit. For trips abroad you need the rental company's permission, often with a cross-border authorisation. A longer drive is a good test of comfort and consumption.

Vehicles are insured by the rental company, which sets cover and excess.

Guide
Weekend, week or longer?
A weekend is often enough for a first impression; a week shows you real everyday life with commuting and shopping. If you want to try an electric car over several weeks, a monthly rental or car subscription may suit you. Many rental companies lower the daily rate for longer rentals.
Test in everyday life, not just on a short drive
Drive the car exactly where you'll need it later: on your commute, in multi-storey car parks, with a child seat and the weekly shop. Pay attention to the seating position, visibility, noise on the motorway and how the infotainment system works. After every drive, note what you like and what bothers you. That way you can compare several models fairly later.
Testing an EV: charging and range
Check how much range you actually get in everyday driving: in winter and on the motorway it's usually lower than stated. Test charging at home, at work and at public chargers. Ask the rental company which charging cable is included, how charging costs are billed and what charge level you should return the car with.
