A rental day covers 24 hours from the agreed pick-up time. If you collect the car at 10 am, you return it by 10 am the next day. If you're late, you may be charged an extra day, depending on the rental company.
Is a rental car cheaper during the week?
Often, yes. Many rental companies have lower daily rates from Monday to Thursday than at the weekend, and some charge a separate weekend rate for Friday to Sunday. If you're flexible, compare two or three dates.
How many kilometres are included with a daily rental?
Each rental company sets the included kilometres per day and states them in the offer. Every additional kilometre costs extra; the price is shown there too. For longer distances, some rental companies offer mileage packages or unlimited kilometres.
Can I extend a daily rental at short notice?
Often, yes, as long as the vehicle isn't already booked afterwards. Contact the rental company as early as possible and have the extension confirmed. Don't simply bring the car back later, as that can get expensive.
What do I need to rent a car for a day?
You need a valid driving licence and ID, and you must meet the rental company's minimum age and licence requirements. Depending on the vehicle, there is also a deposit. You can pay the rental price by card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Klarna, for example.
Is a daily rental better than car sharing?
For a few minutes in the city, car sharing is often more practical. But if you need the car for a large part of the day, are driving longer distances or need a van, a daily rental is often easier to plan, with a fixed price and a reserved vehicle.

Plan pick-up and return carefully
Agree the times with the rental company and allow a buffer, especially if you need to catch a train after the return. Take photos of the car and the fuel gauge at handover. That way you avoid discussions about scratches or refuelling charges.
How the daily rental works
A rental day lasts 24 hours from the agreed pick-up time, not until midnight. So if you collect the car in the afternoon, you can return it the next afternoon. If you go over the time, the rental company may charge an extra day. If you only need the car for a few hours, check whether there's an 8-hour hourly rate.
Day of the week and season affect the price
During the week, especially Monday to Thursday, daily rates are lower with many rental companies than at the weekend. Some charge a separate weekend daily rate for Friday to Sunday. School holidays, public holidays and good weather also push up demand. If you're flexible, simply picking another day often saves money.
