Support & help›Can I ride a scooter on a car licence?
In Germany and Austria you can usually ride a 50 cc scooter with up to 45 km/h on a category B licence, as AM is included. For a 125 cc you need A1 or, in Germany, the B196 code, but that's only valid within the country. Different rules apply in Switzerland.
What is B196?
B196 is an extension of the German car licence: after a rider training course without a test, you may ride light motorcycles up to 125 cc. Requirements include a minimum age of 25 and holding a category B licence for at least five years. The entitlement is only valid in Germany.
Do I need a helmet?
Yes, helmets are compulsory on scooters, for riders and passengers. Some rental companies include a helmet or rent one out for an extra charge. Many people prefer to bring their own for hygiene reasons.
Can two people ride a scooter?
Only if the scooter is approved for two people and has a pillion seat with footrests. Many 50 cc and 125 cc scooters are, but not all. The number of seats is shown in the vehicle details.
How old do I have to be to rent a scooter?
Each rental company sets its own rules, often independently of the legal minimum age for the licence. For 125 cc scooters it is usually higher than for 50 cc. You'll find the conditions with every offer.
Can I rent an electric scooter with a seat?
Some rental companies offer electric mopeds and scooters. Models up to 45 km/h generally require the same licence class as a 50 cc. Check the range and ask how and where you can charge the scooter.

Guide
Tip for your first ride
Before setting off, get familiar with the brakes, indicators and stand and do a test lap away from traffic. Check that the lights and mirrors are set correctly. Photos of the scooter at handover protect you if there are questions about scratches on return.
Which licence for which scooter?
For scooters up to 50 cc and 45 km/h you need category AM, which in Germany and Austria is included in the category B car licence. For a 125 cc you need category A1; in Germany B196 also works, in Austria B with code 111. Both extensions are only valid in their own country, and Switzerland has its own rules: there, scooters usually require category A1.
Helmet and safety
Helmets are compulsory on every scooter, for passengers too. Sturdy shoes, long clothing and gloves protect you in a fall. Ride defensively, especially in town, as drivers easily overlook two-wheelers. A passenger needs an approved seat; whether a second helmet is included is best clarified with your request.
