No, with code 78 you may only drive cars with automatic transmission. If you drive a manual car anyway, you don't have a valid licence for that vehicle, which also affects your insurance cover.
Are all electric cars automatic?
Yes, electric cars generally have no manual gearbox and drive like an automatic. That makes them a good choice if you're only allowed to drive an automatic or simply prefer one.
Are there vans with automatic transmission?
Yes, with some rental companies. Many vans still have a manual gearbox, though. So if you depend on it, choose a vehicle with the automatic feature specifically.
Is an automatic more expensive than a manual?

Driving tips for switchers
If you usually drive a manual, it's best to keep your left foot still and brake and accelerate with your right foot only. At handover, ask for the gear selector positions and the parking function to be explained. Electric cars add regenerative braking. After a few minutes it feels completely natural.
Codes 78 and 197
If you took your driving test in an automatic, your licence usually shows code 78, which means you may only drive automatics. Germany has an exception with code 197: after additional training, you may also drive manual cars despite your automatic test. If in doubt, check field 12 of your driving licence.
Which cars are automatic?
Premium and executive cars, most SUVs, electric cars and hybrids almost always come with automatic transmission. Small and compact cars and vans, on the other hand, are still often manual. If you need an automatic, book a car with this feature specifically rather than just a car class.
