Support & help›Can I rent a manual car with code 78?
No, with code 78 you may only drive cars with automatic transmission. If you drive a manual car anyway, you don't have a valid licence for that vehicle, which also affects your insurance cover.
Are all electric cars automatic?
Yes, electric cars generally have no manual gearbox and drive like an automatic. That makes them a good choice if you're only allowed to drive an automatic or simply prefer one.
Are there vans with automatic transmission?
Yes, with some rental companies. Many vans still have a manual gearbox, though. So if you depend on it, choose a vehicle with the automatic feature specifically.
Is an automatic more expensive than a manual?
Sometimes, especially in small car classes. For larger cars, automatic is often standard anyway, so there's no surcharge. Comparing the offers quickly shows you the difference.
What does code 197 mean?
Code 197 exists in Germany: after a test in an automatic and additional training, it allows you to drive manual cars too. Which cars you may rent always depends on what your driving licence says.
What is Rentlo?
Rentlo is a marketplace for all kinds of rental vehicles in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. You rent directly from verified local rental companies.
How does renting in Germany, Austria and Switzerland work?
Choose a vehicle, pick your dates and send a request. Once the rental company confirms, you pay securely online and collect the car or have it delivered.
When do I pay?
Only once the rental company has confirmed your request. Payment runs via Stripe.
Which payment methods are available?
Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut Pay, iDEAL and Klarna. For some vehicles you can pay 10 % online and the rest in cash at pick-up.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
The rental company decides per vehicle. Many deposits can be paid online; otherwise on site.
Show all 15 questions
How old do I need to be?
Minimum age and licence duration are shown on each vehicle.
How is the vehicle insured?
Vehicles are insured by the rental company, which sets cover and excess.
What is the best price guarantee?
Rental companies offer their vehicles on Rentlo at the same price as directly. Found it cheaper? Let us know.
Can I cancel?
Before confirmation you can withdraw for free. After that the rental company's cancellation terms apply.
Is there a Rentlo app?
Yes, for iPhone and Android, including Rentlo Shorts with real videos and sound.
Guide
Cost and fuel consumption
Automatic cars are sometimes slightly more expensive to rent than comparable manual cars, especially in the smaller classes. Modern automatic gearboxes are efficient; fuel consumption depends more on the car and your driving style. Compare the total price including mileage and deposit.
Driving tips for switchers
If you usually drive a manual, it's best to keep your left foot still and brake and accelerate with your right foot only. At handover, ask for the gear selector positions and the parking function to be explained. Electric cars add regenerative braking. After a few minutes it feels completely natural.
Codes 78 and 197
If you took your driving test in an automatic, your licence usually shows code 78, which means you may only drive automatics. Germany has an exception with code 197: after additional training, you may also drive manual cars despite your automatic test. If in doubt, check field 12 of your driving licence.
